ABDOMINOPLASTY / TUMMY TUCK
The procedure commonly known as TUMMY TUCK surgery and medically termed ABDOMINOPLASTY is done for the purpose of removing excess skin and fat from a loose and drooping (ptotic) abdomen, and tightening the abdominal muscles in cases where they have lost their tone.
This tummy tuck operation is for individuals who have loose skin in the lower abdomen, along with looseness and laxity of the abdominal wall muscles, with or without excess fat accumulation in the upper and lower abdomen, and the flanks (love handles). In women this condition is usually the result of multiple pregnancies, and it is also usually associated with “stretch marks”. In men, it is usually a result of fluctuations in weight and inadequate exercise.
These problems involving the abdomen are collectively termed ABDOMINAL REDUNDANCY. There are different degrees of abdominal redundancy. There are those that only have excess localized fat with tight skin and muscles. The treatment for these is liposculpture alone. And then there are those who have the full range of problems: skin laxity in the upper and lower abdomen, laxity of the muscles, fat accumulation in the upper/lower abdomen and flanks, and sometimes an abdominal hernia (A defect in the integrity of the abdominal muscles and fascia which would allow an outpouching of the abdominal contents). These patients require a full abdominoplasty, liposculpture, and repair of their abdominal hernia. And then there are those in between, who may require less extensive procedures, such as a MODIFIED TUMMY TUCK.
Under certain circumstances a combined vertical and horizontal excision (Fleur-de-Lys Excision) would have to be carried out for the best result. Finally there are those, usually after massive weight loss, with circumferential sagging who will benefit most from a circumferential body lift or “Torsoplasty” (Look under Post-Bariatric Reconstruction).
Dr. Abrams was one of the pioneers in carrying out different types of abdominoplasties as an outpatient over 20 years ago, which set a trend in the plastic surgery community and the results have been very gratifying. Patients feel much more comfortable when they know that they will go home right after adequate recovery from anesthesia and experience has shown that recovery is much faster. Through the use of procedures that have developed out of years of personal experience Dr. Abrams is able to minimize the patient’s pain and discomfort at home and provide what, according to most of his patients, are very gratifying results.
