Breast
Reduction
Generally considered one of the most gratifying
operations in plastic surgery, BREAST REDUCTION
or REDUCTION MAMMOPLASTY is carried out
in cases of excess breast size and weight.
Women with D-cup breasts and larger suffer
from back, shoulder, and neck pain, and
neck strain. These women often have deep
indentations in the area of their bra straps
which sometimes cut through the skin leaving
unwanted scars. In addition they may have
irritation under their bra undersurface
of their breasts which may lead to infection
and excoriation. All as a result of excessive
breast weight. The breasts in these women
are often pendulous and sagging. This condition
can be present in all age groups after adolescence.
The breast reduction procedure is available
to relieve these symptoms by removing excess
skin, fat, and breast tissue. The breasts
are thus rendered lighter, better contoured,
and firmer. A co-existing sagging of the
breasts is also corrected, as are other
problems such as asymmetry in size and shape.
Reduction mammoplasty is a surprisingly
pain-free operation. It is carried out as
an outpatient, in contrast to what used
to be practiced ten years ago, and patients
are usually able to return to their regular
activities within a few days.
Recent
developments in the techniques of this operation
have resulted in less scarring, with the
advent of the vertical and short scar techniques.
Dr. Abrams has vast experience in all techniques
of this operation, especially the modern
techniques recently popularized.
