Liposuction
(Suction
Assisted Lipoplasty, Liposculpture, SAL)
Since its
inception in the late 1970’s, liposuction
has come a long way. Through this evolutionary
process we now have a better understanding
of the procedure, we have better technology
at our disposal, and we are able to provide
this service with virtually no risk and
with much more predictable results.
Liposculpture is meant to remove and contour
those localized areas of fat accumulation
such as the buttocks and hips, which are
not responsive to diet and exercise. It
yields the best outcome when the patient
is close to his/her ideal weight, and the
skin is firm and smooth. It is an outpatient
procedure with very fast recovery. It can
be done under local anesthesia with minimal
discomfort either during surgery or afterwards.
Usually the patient is ready to return to
work in 2-3 days.
With
the latest methods of TUMESCENT LIPOSUCTION,
SUPERFICIAL LIPOSCULPTURE using the SYRINGE
TECHNIQUE, and the use of FINE (2-3 mm)
CANNULAE, large amounts of fat can safely
be removed, up to 10,000 cc’s. This
is in stark contrast to the traditional
teaching which considered 2,000 cc’s
as the safe limit. However, it has to be
understood that liposuction and liposculpture
are not weight reduction measures and they
are not suitable in people with generalized
obesity. When these methods are applied
to obese individuals, the aspirated fat
is almost guaranteed to re-accumulate. Liposuction
is also not the answer to the loose abdomen
that has resulted from multiple pregnancies.
The looseness in such abdomens is the result
of laxity in the muscle and skin layer of
the abdomen and fat accumulation is only
a part of the problem. Therefore aspirating
the fat alone is only a partial solution
to the problem. The solution to such a loose
abdomen is surgical correction in the form
of an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) with or
without liposuction.
